Does the goal of using “place” as a vehicle to transform lives sound enticing but somehow more attainable outside your own neighborhood? The idea of redemptive real estate may really resonate with you… as long as it is from a distance.
My story is similar. My family moved into a neighborhood many years ago and waited… We waited for neighbors with cookies, block parties, and kid parades. Well, these things never happened. After about five years of simply knowing our neighbors by the color of their cars and closed garage doors, we made some changes.
We were challenged by church initiatives around being a good neighbor, and movements like The Art of Neighboring and The Turquoise Table. We were convicted by the waiting we had been doing. We waited instead of being the ones to do the going. We made some changes and started intentionally investing in our neighbor relationships. I wish I could say that we were strategic and had a five-step plan. The reality is that we simply did our best to try and build relationships our neighbors.
As I reflect back on this time, the things that we did fell into a few buckets. Which I will elaborate on at a later date. For the moment, the three buckets were.
We committed to learning names and listening for hopes and hurts.
We created physical space to gather.
We served and served with our neighbors.
Because of these type of actions, we started to see more smiles, more conversations, and a stronger sense of community. It wasn’t about grand gestures but about consistent, small efforts to connect and care for those around us.
Transformation starts with us. By taking the initiative to be good neighbors, we can create a ripple effect that leads to a more connected and caring community. Don't wait for others to make the first move. Be the ones who go, who reach out, and who make our neighborhoods places of friendship, hope and flourishing.
