Just One More Week...

We placed a resident in an apartment shortly after acquiring a small apartment community. She made her first month’s rent payment but fell behind after losing her job.

We have been referring her to local services along the way, but she has been unsuccessful in recovering from the financial setback caused by her job loss. We desire healthy communities with flourishing residents; stable, connected, and long-term residents are crucial to flourishing places. We always prioritize working alongside our residents and helping them stay in their apartments.

As we were considering the next steps, our property manager received a message from the resident. She expressed how vital this apartment is to her and her young son. She apologized for the situation and explained that she had just been hired at a local medical center. She asked for just one more week.

Entering into stories like this can be difficult, messy, complicated, personal...human. At our core, we want this mother and son to flourish. We also have metrics, strategies, and obligations that can sometimes seem in opposition to individual care and concern…impersonal.

We have made the intentional decision to live in both worlds at the same time. We live in the tension between compassion and business. These don't have to be mutually exclusive, as we are often told. Many of us, as parents, make decisions that straddle similar dynamics. We want the best for our kids, and at the same time, we have to consider the boundaries, expectations, and broader responsibilities within our families.

Business can exist in a similar in-between space. One where we desire both the best for our customers (residents) and the well-being of the business in order to thrive and continue to operate and provide housing for many others.

Of course, we extended another week. Sometimes people just need a small break that becomes the first domino in stopping cycles or transforming their lives. Our team is expectant in being a small part of lining up the first dominos of many for this mother and her son.

We invite you to learn more about our approach and how we implement these principles in our work. Stay updated on our initiatives by subscribing to our updates or attending our upcoming webinars. Join us on this journey as we strive to redefine success in real estate investment. www.sovsage.com
