Buckets to Block Parties

In early July, we hosted a block party at our Westview community.

The property manager helped coordinate a local food truck that served hotdogs and shaved ice for the residents. We desired to connect with the residents and work to create more of a sense of community. The food truck served 30 hotdogs and 40 shaved ice to both residents, vendors and some extended family members. It was a great opportunity to engage with residents and mutually share a bit about our stories.

One resident, spoke with the property manager and expressed how grateful he was for not only the party and the food but the recent changes in his apartment. He was delighted to have a fully functional kitchen sink. He had become accustomed to utilizing a bucket under the sink that caught all the drain water. During his time as a resident with the previous ownership group, the sink had never been connected to the drain lines. Instead it drained directly into a bucket within the cabinet. Once the bucket was near full, he would dump the bucket into the bathtub.

We remedied this for him as soon as we were made aware. Our goal is enriching communities. Sometimes this may look like big acquisitions, sweeping changes or dynamic partnerships. But more often, it will look like making the small decision that impacts someone's life in a positive way.

Strong Towns says if we want to build strong places and, in the process, improve people lives, we should follow a four-step approach:

  1. Humbly observe where people in the community struggle.

  2. Ask the question: What is the next smallest thing we can do right now to address that struggle?

  3. Do that thing. Do it right now.

  4. Repeat.

Removing buckets and throwing block parties are relatively small actions, but to one resident, these are barriers and beginnings. Barriers inhibit flourishing and beginnings can foster hope. We are excited to continue to remove barriers and participate in beginnings that build community.

We invite you to learn more about our approach and how we implement these principles in our work. Stay updated on our initiatives by subscribing to our updates or attending our upcoming webinars.
